Happy Towel Day!

May 25th is celebrated as World Towel Day! Weird thing to celebrate you may think, but not fans of the hugely popular science fiction comedy The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. The day is celebrated to honour the work of Douglas Adams the Author of the book, who died in May 2001. The day was first celebrated on May 25th, 2001 two weeks after his death at 49.

This unofficial holiday has its origin in the famous phrase from the series that refers to a towel as “…the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.”

How people celebrate the day? Well, they apparently carry a towel with them at all times during the day. They find surprisingly useful ways in which towels can come to their aid. From protection from pollution to a weapon of safety, fans come up with different ways to use the towel.

Towel day has been gaining popularity across the world including India. There have been many shows organized across the world to celebrate the day. From Radio shows to live events this day and the book series is sure beefing up its fan base across the world.
